During
the 1983 League of Kentucky Sportsmen's convention, Bob Garner, (Rabbit) as he
is known to his friends, watched as trophies were being handed out to kids in
recognition of their shooting expertise. Bob did not forget that moment.
In 1988, with the completion of the new NEKFG facilities, Bob started the 8th
wildlife district squirrel rifle shoot. 21 years later, Bob is still championing
the shoot.
There are 9 wildlife districts in Kentucky and in Bob's 21 years at the helm there have been over 70 state champions from the 8th district. Bob has mentored over 500 youth shooters during this time. There are categories for boy's and girls with age groups in each category. A nine and under group, 10-12, 13-16, and 17-20. The squirrel rifle shoot is scheduled on the 2nd Monday of each month starting June 15th and concluding the last of October. The squirrel rifle shoot also accommodates shooters with special needs. Its all free, but donations of shooting supplies is appreciated.
